NAKED EYE - AS SEEN ON TV (14.01.01)
In the fifth year of business, Naked Eye appeared on national television. Channel 4 featured the work of Naked Eye's Sandra Fleming as part of their introductory programme for a photography event entitled YR.1. Sandra and some of her previous clients were included in a piece showing some of her work, and some of the background stories connected with it, on the hour-long programme broadcast on Channel 4 on 14th January 2001.
Sandra's work was noticed through this website and she was asked to participate in the YR.1 programme to show some of the potential of digital imaging.
" The digital age has made what I do possible. My background is in traditional photography, but when I realised what can be achieved with digital imaging I was hooked! Now my work ranges from copying old photographs and saving them to CD to repairing tears and creases, removing unwanted objects and completely changing backgrounds. It just depends what my client wants from the end result. There's always a story behind a treasured photo, and that's one of the best parts of what I do. It's what makes my work so interesting."
"Illuminations Television, who produced the programmes for Channel 4, asked if they could come and film me at work and I was delighted to oblige. It's often difficult for me to explain in words what I do, but much easier to demonstrate. I hope it gave people an insight into digital imaging and encouraged them to try it themselves. I also hope this whole event will encourage people to experiment with their own photographic equipment, no matter what they have. I love to see how others create their own interpretation of the world. You don't need an expensive camera for that - just a bit of original thought."
YR.1 was the largest ever photographic competition bringing together the work of both professional and amateur photographers in their quests to find the defining image of Britain in "Year 1" of the new millennium. As well as the largest ever national open photographic competition, the event encompassed a series of print supplements in The Guardian/Observer (the YR.1 broadsheet partner), a glossy book published by Channel 4 in association with The Photographer's Gallery, an extensive online experience, exhibitions across the UK, educational initiatives in schools and colleges, spectacular laser projections of images throughout Britain - on buildings, on scaffolding sites and on specially erected screens in both urban and rural locations, a collaboration with five of Britain's best and most exciting photographers and an enquiry into what photography is, and might be, in the digital age.
